What you'll usually need
Tick things off as you gather them. Your ticks are saved on this phone only.
Steps
- Study the Highway Code. The test checks what you know about road rules and signs.
- Book your test and pay the fee in person at your nearest VID depot.
- Sit the computer-based Electronic Learner's Licence Test (ELLT) at the depot. You can choose English, chiShona or isiNdebele.
- If you pass, you get your learner's licence. It is valid for 12 months, so take your road test before it runs out.
Good to know
- You must be at least 16 to get a learner's licence for a car or a motorcycle.
- Lost your learner's licence? You can apply for a duplicate. The 2023 regulations set the fee at US$15. Ask at the VID depot where you passed, or at CVR, how to apply.
- The Ministry of Transport's website often doesn't load, so phone or visit the office instead.
Watch out
Never pay anyone to get a learner's licence without sitting the test, even someone at a VID depot. VID clerks were arrested in 2026 for selling them, and such licences can be cancelled. Pay the test fee only at the official VID cashier and keep the official receipt.
