Steps

  1. Register on the NSSA self-service portal within 30 days of becoming an employer. You get a reference number when you submit. Approval usually comes within a day, and NSSA then tells you your employer (SSR) number.
  2. Register your employees with their national ID numbers. You can upload many at once. Each worker gets a Social Security Number by SMS.
  3. Every month, file the P4 return on the portal. Pay the contributions and accident-scheme premiums separately, into an NSSA collection account, with a P4A remittance advice. You can pay by bank transfer, cash or mobile money. If you pay by transfer, send copies of the transfer, the P4 and the P4A to your nearest NSSA office. Ask NSSA for the due date. Its compliance office has said it is the 10th of each month.
  4. If a worker is injured at work, report it to NSSA on form WCIF 14 within 14 days. You can report it at an NSSA office or on the self-service portal. If the accident is fatal or serious, tell the nearest NSSA office and the police within 24 hours.

Good to know

  • The pension scheme covers workers aged 16 to 64. It doesn't cover domestic workers or informal workers.
  • The self-service portal is sometimes slow or unavailable. Try again later, or call NSSA's contact centre on Call 402.

Watch out

NSSA warns about employers who take contributions out of workers' wages but don't pay them to NSSA. Workers can ask NSSA to check their contribution record.
