Pay your ZBC radio and TV licence

By law, if you have a radio or TV, you need a listener's licence from the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC). Before ZINARA or an insurer will renew your licence disc or insurance, you must show a ZBC radio licence. If the car has no radio, show an exemption instead.

Steps

  1. Check whether you need a licence. The Broadcasting Services Act says you need a ZBC licence if you have a receiver. A receiver is any set that can pick up a broadcast, including home radios, TVs and radios fitted in vehicles.
  2. For a home radio or TV, get the licence from ZBC. ZBC issues licences, and so do agents that ZBC appoints. Ask a ZBC licensing office for the current fee and keep your receipt.
  3. For a car radio, pay when you renew with ZINARA. Since 15 July 2025, ZINARA and insurers need to see a current ZBC radio licence or exemption. Without one, they won't issue a licence disc or insurance. You can get the radio licence at ZINARA, together with the vehicle licence and insurance.
  4. No radio in the car? Get the exemption first. The law lets you sign a sworn declaration that the vehicle has no radio receiver. But ZINARA has told motorists to bring an exemption certificate from a ZBC licensing office. Get one before you go to renew.
  5. Keep your licence where you can find it. A ZBC inspector or a police officer can ask to see it. If you can't show it, they can give you a notice to show it at a police station within 7 days.

Good to know

  • ZBC cut its licence fees from 15 January 2026 (Statutory Instrument 203A of 2025). The Herald reported that a household TV licence fell from US$100 to US$24 a year. Ask ZBC or ZINARA for the other rates before you pay.
  • According to The Herald, you can pay the new fees in ZiG at the market rate of the day.
  • Tourists who live outside Zimbabwe don't need a licence for a radio or TV they bring in for up to three months. Dealers don't need one for sets kept at their business or used for demonstrations. The Minister can also exempt whole groups of listeners from the fee.
  • At ZINARA offices you can pay in US dollars cash, by bank transfer (RTGS), EcoCash or InnBucks. For ZINARA help, call Call 0242 442 711 or WhatsApp WhatsApp 0712 245 276.
  • Fines: having a radio or TV without a licence is an offence, with a fine of up to level 3. The court can also order you to pay the licence fee you owe, and can order that the State takes the set.
  • Giving false information to get a licence is a separate offence. It carries a fine of up to level 5, up to six months in prison, or both.

Watch out

The "no radio" declaration is a sworn statement. Don't sign it if your vehicle has a radio.
